Alexander Murray was born in Rogart, Sutherlandshire, Scotland. As a pioneer Highland settler he immigrated to Nova Scotia, Canada after his four sons and two daughters were grown. All his children also immigrated to Nova Scotia, either with Alexander or followed after with their families. He is buried in the Scotsburn* cemetery. The inscription on an old moss-grown stone reads "He was an honest man, a faithful friend and a good husband. He was much respected when he was alive and much regretted when he died".
